Day 1 - Atlanta, Georgia to Tupelo, Mississippi-- 311 miles

Here my dad and I are getting ready to head west to the Natchez Trace Parkway, one of the most famous scenic rides in the country.

Of all the days for it to be pouring rain...

Dad and I have wanted to take th
is particular trip for several years, and when we finally get the chance to go, heavy rains arrive. We couldn't wait too long, or we would have to cancel the whole trip. So we decided to take off while it was still raining... no worries though, cause our bikes have all the bells and whistles that you could possibly want so that the rain wouldn't be any bother. Yeah right.

Our machines and rain gear seemed to be in good working order-- Dad's riding a red 1995 Honda ST 1100 and I have a grey 2002 BMW R1100S.

We got poured on all the way to the Alabama State line. Hilarious. At one point, we couldn't even see and had to slow down to a crawl. I have incredible rain gear, and I still got pretty wet. Dad, who is "Mr. I'm gonna find the cheapest rain gear I can find", was completely soaked. We took this shot at the Alabama border, right before the rain stopped.

After lunch in Gadsden, we hustled to make it to Florence, one of the more beautiful towns I have seen. The Tennessee River runs through Florence, and we stopped to take some pictures of the Yacht Club on the River. The club was setting up for a "Professional" Bass Fishing Tournament, and I had to get a pic with the Tournament Director (who looks like Uncle Jessie from the Dukes of Hazzard).

We jumped on the Natchez Trace Parkway just outside of Florence, and rode it all the way to Tupelo, Mississippi (the birthplace of Elvis Presley). The Parkway is absolutely immaculate... beautiful scenic views, wildlife, and hardly any other cars on the road. We saw plenty of whitetails and at least a couple of dozen turkeys. After finishing up in Tupelo, we went to Outback for a steak and then got a hotel room at the Comfort Inn. Talk about 5 star accommodations. Tomorrow's plan is to ride the Trace through Jackson, MS to the city of Natchez.
